Bill Henderson

Marital status: Married
Children: 2
Occupation: Minister
Comment: I know what you're thinking. "Wasn't his Dad a Pastor? He oughta know better!" Yes, and yes! Surprised me too.  Vietnam days shook some things deep within me, convincing me of my suspicions all along, that this world needs the best we can give. And this is mine. Seminary degrees in NC and Ky during which I enjoyed reliving my misspent youth in Ministries with youth and young singles. Trained in Pastoral therapy but found I really enjoyed leading worship and preaching. (Harmon was prophetic!)

After 3 pastorates in Georgia, finishing 14 years at St. Simons Is, I felt the tug to do something newly relevant. Was able to get some specialized training through Wake Forest Baptist  Hospital, dealing with congregations in crisis, and really found a unique calling as transitioning pastor, leading churches through loss and confusion. Bet you know a few, as our generation left quite a few in our wake. It is a fertile field when a church wants to become relevant again. My wife, my what she has endured, has been my best partner through it all. PS, I love my kids and they're laughing at everything they hear about how we once used to do things. And this, you people are very special to me, and I can't wait to see you and catch up!

Comment: Well, 50 years certainly is a long time and hard to believe that we are now where we are.  Have loved reading everyone's profiles and look forward to seeing you in October.  My life has been filled wth just about everything: ups and downs; successes and failures; happiness and sadness.  All of the time being surrounded by amazing friends and family.  Although have lived in DC area for about 45 years (had to count on my fingers) Jacksonville is still home and memories are vivid.  Today life is good, very good!

Comment:

After leaving Lee, I got a BS in Journalism in '68 at UF.  Then three years in the Army as an infantry officer, the last year as an infantry platoon leader in Vietnam.   I worked in Jax as a commercial photographer for a couple of years, then used the GI Bill to go back and get a BSEE (UF, '76) and MSEE (Texas A&M, '78).

In '78 I went to work as a new-product R&D engineer for Scientific Atlanta.  I loved that work and did it for more than two decades, while I taught junior college at night, got married, got divorced, and ran a small business developing and selling ham radio gadgets.  The last five years before my 2009 retirement I managed development projects for Cisco Systems, for about a year each in Holland, UK, France, Monaco, and Belgium.  Really fun.

My only child, Beth,
has been the center of my universe since the day she was born. She now lives in Dallas where she is married to Brad Hubbard, and they have two beautiful kids, Mac and Ella.  Nowadays I stay busy with trips to Dallas and other places, some duplicate bridge, photography (www.HuddlestonGallery.com), electronic tinkering, and fun outdoorsy stuff.  I love retirement!

Veteran? Which branch?: US Army and later FL NG

Comment: I graduated from Agnes Scott College in '68 and married Bill Johns in '69. I taught school at St. Mark's Episcopal Day School for 30 years and retired in 2012. We have two sons, and three grandchildren. Bill retired last year and we moved to Vilano Beach.  I spend most of my days with my AA group (that's aqua aerobics),  exercising, reading, painting, and my evenings drinking sangria on the beach with Bill. Nothing beats being retired at the beach with a smokin' (he smokes cigars) hot husband.
