Comment:
After graduation I rode my BMW motorcycle to my birthplace, Ashland, Kentucky, and got a great paying union job ($2.50/hour) working for ARMCO Steel. I spent most of the money that I made on a brand new, special order, 1965 GTO that I almost destroyed after only one week of drag racing on the local streets. (The local police there were a lot more tolerant than the ones around Jacksonville.) After 2 years of mostly playing with cars, I was about to be drafted so I enlisted in the USMC and was trained in Avionics (aircraft electronics). I was assigned to the UH-1E (huey) gunship helicopter squadron VMO-6 for the year 0f 1968 near Khe Sanh in Quang Tri Province, RVN. The remainder of my service was with the President's Helicopter Squadron HMX-1 based in Quantico, VA. I never thought that I would be able to afford college but after the service, with the help of the GI Bill, I attended the University of Kentucky and finally got my BSEE in 1977. I worked as an electrical and mechanical engineer on building design and construction for the next 20 years in the Lexington, Kentucky area. Since then I have been a self-employed landlord and now live with my wife of 20 years, Emily, in West Palm Beach, FL. I have a 33 year old son from a previous marriage and a 13 year old grandson who lives with his mother in Los Angles, CA. My hobbies have been traveling, running, shooting, snow and water skiing, sailing, fishing, SCUBA and Texas Hold ’em poker. My favorite website is Wikipedia. |

Comment: I'm not sure I can summarize the past 50 years but I can address what I have been doinig for the past 15+. When Richard and I moved back to Florida I became (once again) involved in local and state politics. I was first appointed to the Planning and Zoning Board and subsequently the Town Council. I became Mayor in 2002 and have run unopposed with this term ending in November 2015. We do not have term limits thus I may run again. There are several types of municipal governments and we are a "strong Mayor" form of government. I am involved with many activities including serving on the Executive Commitee for the Florida League of Cities, Director for Florida League of Cities, Director and founding member of the Florida League of Mayors. I also serve as Director on Florida Business Watch and Advisory Committee for the American Cancer Society. I am past President of the Space Coast League of Cities and chair several committees including the Intergovenmental Affairs & Advocacy Committee. I received the Home Rule Hero award in 2012 and 2014 for my legislative advocacy. I was a finalist for Mayor of the Year in 2007. I am very involved in Relay for Life as a survivor. Also involved with Boy Scouts of America and have served for several years as a Teen Court Judge. I could not do all these things without the support of my wonderful husband Richard who retired from "government" life several years ago. He also gives a great deal of his "free" to volunteer at Holmes Medical Center, the Brevard County Sheriffs Office (COPS program) and Project Life Saver. My daughter still lives in Jacksovnille (Julington Creek area) and my step children (all grown with families) live from California to Oklahoma. We have 5 wonderful grandchildren that we don't see often enough. We do love to travel and are members of the Space Coast Gator Club. This seems so long, I am looking forward to the reunion and catching up with everyone. |
